The town was originally built up around a jetty which was set up to ship the Apuan marbles. Many kings, queens and European nobility flocked to the area and built magnificent holiday villas protected by the greenery or the ancient pinewood forests. Forte Dei Marmi was one of Italy's first beach resorts begun at the turn of the century. The town takes its name from the fortress that rises up in the middle of the town square. It was built to defend the town from attacks and later used to store the marble quarried from the Apuan Mountains before being shipped out.

Today, part of the original environment has been turned into gardens, kitchen gardens and meadows while some of the villas have been transformed into perfect Forte Dei Marmi Hotels. With large terraces and balconies, guests can enjoy stunning views of the sea, the Alpuan Alps or the peaceful gardens that surround the villas.
